The electronic cigarette was first regarded by the Food and Drug Administration as a drug and drug-based addictive substance.  In addition, it has the distinction of being one of the few drugs listed by the FDA that is also considered (although this is not a particularly ringing endorsement) an assistive drug that allows patients trying to quit smoking to have a respite from the withdrawal symptoms that nicotine imposes.

The FDA and the electronic cigarette have been doing just such a “dance” of research ever since the scientific torch was raised upon the new product, but the light of science’s beams seems to be disclosing a device that is non-threatening and some have even suggest 1000 times safer than smoking a tobacco cigarette.

At first, the FDA was very cautious, warning, in its earliest findings, that the electronic cigarette may indeed pose a health threat to users, and that it would not be useful as a cessation device for quitting smoking.  One organizational statement, while it did not link cigarettes and e cigarettes directly, seemed to imply that there was virtually no difference between the e cigarette and the normal Camel or Salem.  This is just complete non-sense.  Many, many doctors and scientists have come out and stated that the ecig is a far safer alternative to smoking.  To me, its a no-brainer.

Thankfully, the fda retracted the idea fairly quickly, when it was challenged and put under scrutiny since this is a crazy statement to make but there was still resistance to the idea that the electronic cigarette would have any benefit for smokers attempting to quit.  There were some fairly solid logical reasons for this, although most of the so-called evidence at the time was anecdotal.

The electronic cigarette, after all, contains nicotine (although in smaller amounts than most cigarettes have).  The reasoning behind the “no-help-quitting” theory was that any substance that actually contains a harmful chemical compound will not be effective in curbing the use of the compound, and breaking the addiction.  The smoker, like the alcoholics who drink “near beer,” would only be switching one addiction for another.

The ultimate lack of persuasiveness to the argument occurred when it was pointed out that “near beer” still doesn’t get one drunk, and drunkenness was the deleterious effect that alcoholics were trying to curb.  The effects of smoking—smell, second-hand smoke, black residue in the lungs—were simply not present in the e cig.

Ultimately, to prove its point and official position that the e cig may be dangerous, the FDA hired the study group Exponent, who, after as lengthy a study as was possible given the time constraints (about six months), concluded that the FDA was actually wrong.  No ill effects can be determined to arise from the e cigarette’s use, and it may indeed help curb one’s “nicotine” appetite.  It was a defeat for the FDA, but good news for cigarette smokers and attempting quitters around the American market.   Electronic cigarettes and the fda testing have proved that there are substantially good benefits to using e cigs.

Like a dance partner embarrassed in a clumsy tango, the FDA is now keeping its distance from the e cig with regard any reports of negative findings.  Although reluctant to endorse the product, it seems the FDA cannot condemn its use.

It is my view and that expressed by many others in the e-cigarette industry that the fda are substantially influenced by the behemoths of the pharmaceutical industry and the tobacco industry.  The electronic cigarette has revolutionized the smoking market worldwide and its introduction could spell the end for the tobacco companies pushing deadly tobacco cigarettes and pharma companies are running scared because lets face it, who wants to chew gum whenyou could be dragging on an ecig which looks and feel just like the real thing.  If the e-cigarette is to fight for its right to become an official stop smoking cessation tool then sales of stop smoking drugs would plummet.  We won round one but you can be sure that we ecig fans are not out the Myre, I don’t think the tobacco giants and the pharma companies will take its wide-scale popularity lying down.

Having a No smoking day is a great way to set a benchmark for quitting smoking and starting vaping.  I have been looking into the facts about smoking tobacco cigarettes and they are not for the faint of heart.  Did you know?

6 million people each and every year – thats 1 person every 6 seconds.  Another crazy statistic from the WHO is that out of the 6 million, 600,000 of these deaths are from second-hand tobacco smoke intake or passive smoking as its called.  this is just crazy.  In this day and age, if tobacco was a new product discovered tomorrow with these stats there’s no way on earth it would be legalised.

However, the fact is that smoking tobacco and cigarettes has escalated to epidemic proportions and the WHO is calling it one of the biggest threats the human race has ever faced.

Now, we all know smoking is dangerous and yes, we understand that it causes cancer but did you also know that there are over 4000 chemicals in a cigarette including tar, carbon monoxide and even rat poison!

50 of these 4000 chemicals are PROVEN KILLERS, this means they will definitely give you cancer – its just a matter of time.  So when you look at the facts it starts to hit home just how much we are risking our lives by puffing away on our little guilty pleasure.  Simple fact is, half of us smokers will be killed by it and dying this way is often a long painful process.

I know better than most, I watched my own Grandmother die from lung cancer.  She made it to a ripe old age of 82 but her final years where very distressing and painful.  It saddens me that I had to watch her fade away, she had always been a very strong and vivacious women.  From the old school where you never complain, you just get your head down and get on with it.  Unfortunately, smoking does not discriminate and even the strongest can succumb to the big C.

So why do we continue to abuse our bodies in this way, I’d say for me, I always had my head in the sand.  I never thought of the long-term and if I did I’d stick my head back in the sand and think, its OK, it won’t happen to ME.  For me, one of the issues was simply that I could not quit cigarettes.  My habit, addiction, whatever you want to call it was too strong for me… or was it that my will power was to weak? Darn.  Well, whatever the reason… I tried all the patches (made me have nightmares), gum (didn’t satisfy my cravings) and tablets (no thanks, too many side-effects) so what was I to do?

Well, thank god for electronic cigarettes.  These things have been a revaluation for me.  I read the other day, that two-thirds of all smokers want to give up and empathize with these people because I was one of them but, giving up just never seemed doable for me.  This is one of the reasons I love e-cigarettes so much.  They are for people who can’t give up but seriously want to change their life.

What are the chemicals in cigarettes?   Well, there’s enough to make you stop lighting up forever.

We know this much scientifically: there are 4000 chemicals in cigarettes, and none of them are any good at all for you.  You’ve already had the cigarette-haters tell you that, and the doctors, and the FDA, and you still keep lighting up.

Maybe a closer look will inspire you to put the matches away and try a cleaner alternative such as ecigs as I have done.

First of all, at least 50 of those dangerous chemicals in cigarettes are carcinogenic— studies have shown time and time again that they cause cancer in mice, in rats, in dogs and especially in humans.  Joe Camel or no, he’s in the hospice right there with you, bald and sweating and hooked up to tubes.  One of those fifty little poisons got him.

There are also traces of rat poison (arsenic, which works great on humans, too, in case you were wondering) and cyanide (the poison they use in the gas chamber).

In effect, when you light up a cigarette, you’re sucking multiple poisons into your lungs, and blowing out carcinogens.  Were you wondering where that cough came from?

There’s one element we haven’t mentioned—nicotine.  It’s addictive, relaxing, powerful and quick.  It’s the only thing you really smoke for, since it gives a heady sensation and immediate relief from stress.

So, knowing all this, why in the world did you and I go down a path of developing such a life destroying habit?
